10-Man Panionios Hang On For Draw
GREEK SUPERLEAGUE - MATCHDAY 4
|PAS Giannina||1 - 1||Panionios|
|Bruno 57'||Masouras 49'|
Panionios held on for a hard-earned point against PAS Giannina on Monday after the final fixture of Matchday 4 ended in an entertaining 1-1 draw at the Zosimades stadium in Ioannina.
The teams on display showed why they are two of the most highly-rated clubs in the SuperLeague with an action-packed performance high on quality – not something that can be said all too often in the Greek top flight.
Panionios went in front five minutes into the second half through Greek midfielder Giorgos Masouras following god work by Valentinos Vlachos, which was in fact harsh on the home side who had dominated proceedings in the first half.
That blow did not dent PAS’s confidence, however, and Giannis Petrakis’ team levelled matters three minutes before the hour mark thanks to a powerful strike from Bruno Chalkiadakis, who took advantage of some bad defending by both Masoud Shojaei and Yaya Banana to beat rookie goalkeeper Leftheris Astras.
Both teams had chances to win the match, but Panionios were the happiest of teams at the finish after they survived a later surge from the hosts who pressed frantically for a winner after Panionios were reduced to 10 players in the 87th minute when Masoud was dismissed for a second bookable offence.
Panionios hang on to third spot in the table with eight points from four matches, along with Olympiacos and PAOK, who also have right points. PAS are fifth with six points.
