10-men Apollon snag a point away to Everton
UEFA EUROPA LEAGUE (GROUP E) - MATCHDAY 2
|Everton||2 - 2||Apollon Limassol|
Apollon Limassol pulled off one of the biggest shocks of the day, playing to a 2-2 draw away to Everton in Thursday’s Europa League action.
he Cypriots got off to an ideal start when Sardinero turned Maglica’s cross into the opening goal for the visitors, leaving the home supporters in shock early on in the match. However, in the 21st minute, a poor back pass from Yuste gave Rooney an easy task to tap the ball into the open net, pulling Everton level at 1-1.
Midway through the second half, Everton were lucky once again as a couple of deflections sent Vlasic in on goal and the Everton striker did well to put the English side in front. All hope looked to be lost in the 86th minute for Apollon when Roberge was sent off, leaving the visitors with 10-men in the final minutes remaining.
However, similar to their opening match against Lyon, Apollon left it late and snagged a point. The villain from earlier, Yuste, flicked on a header from Pedro’s in-swinging free-kick as the ball traveled into the back of the net, giving Apolon the dramatic late draw and an important point in their Europa League group.
After two rounds, Apollon sit second in the group, tied with Lyon on two points while Atlanta lead the group with four points. Everton are last with only one point from two matches.
