With two great goals from Giorgos Tzavellas and Nikos Karelis, Greece was victorious 2-1 in today’s friendly match against Montenegro. The win and overall performance shows that Greece is on track to build a new team for the 2018 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers.
Greece pressed early in the match but slowly fell off towards the end of the first half. They came back at the beginning of the second half when Tzavellas’ scored a free kick. Two minutes later, however, the visitors equalized from a header by Tomasevic. Despite the equalizer, Karelis was sent through by Fortounis’ pass and with a great finish gave Greece the 2-1 victory. There is no doubt that this win will give Greece the confidence they need as they continue to prepare for the 2018 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers. This was Greece’s first win under Michael Skibbe since he took over in November. Greece will play their second friendly against stronger opponents Iceland on Tuesday.
