A strong third quarter was enough for Olympiacos to defeat Rethymno 73-77, sending the Erythrolefki to the semi-finals of the A1 Basket League Playoffs. Olympiacos swept Rethymo 2-0 in the best of 3 series and will play the winner of the AEK-PAOK series.
Olympiacos got off to a rough start in Rethymno, trailing behind 3 points at the end of the first quarter. At the beginning of the second quarter, Olympiacos could not find their rhythm and Rethymno kept their lead. Mid-way through the second, Olympiacos bounced back, taking a four point lead into halftime. The visitors played an exceptional third quarter using their defense to hold Rethymno scoreless for four minutes. On the offensive end, they increased their lead by 19 points and kept their advantage into the fourth. Their lead slowly decreased in the final quarter as Rethymno brought the deficit down to 4 points with 1:30 remaining. Athinaiou increased his team's lead to 6 points with less than a minute remaining, helping Olympiacos come away with the 73-77 victory. Warrick was the leading scorer for Olympiacos with 17 points and Spanoulis scored 14 points. The leading scorer for Rethymno was Carter with 14 points.
The win sends Olympiacos to the semi-finals of the A1 Basket League Playoffs where they will play the winner of the AEK-PAOK series. Currently, AEK and PAOK are tied at 1-1 with game 3 scheduled for Wednesday.
