GREEK SUPERLEAGUE PLAYOFFS - MATCHDAY 1

Panionios 1 - 1 Panathinaikos
Ansarifard 52' Leto 66'

Panionios and Panathinaikos drew 1-1 in the opening match of the SuperLeague Playoffs. Panionios opened the score in the second half after Panathinaikos’ keeper, Steele, made a tragic mistake from Nano’s back pass. Fourteen minutes later Leto, with a fantastic finish, equalized for the visitors.

Panathinaikos kept possession early in the game and came close to an opener when Berg’s strike hit the woodwork. As the game progressed, Panionios started to press on and Bakasetas, like Berg, hit the post with a long ranged shot. During the same chance, Ansarifard slipped behind the defense, but his shot went wide of Steele’s goal. Seven minute into the second half, Nano played a back pass to Steele (wrongfully) and the ball went through the Panathinaikos keeper’s hands, giving Ansarifard an open net to put Panionios ahead 1-0.  Steele made a similar mistake in Nea Smyrni, during the regular season match between the two teams. The visiting keeper redeemed himself, denying Ansarifard on one on one opportunity, after the Iranian broke through the Panathinaikos defense. The save kept Panathinaikos in the match and in the 67th minute Leto, with a fantastic turn around strike, beat Dioudis to level the scores. From there, neither side created a “classical” chance to score and the game ended 1-1.

Given the fact that it is early in the Playoffs, it will be seen in the future if the draw was a good or bad results for both teams. View the current SuperLeague Playoff Standings here…
