Captain Nikos Zisis Retires From National Team

The captain of the Greek National Basketball Team, Nikos Zisis, announced his retirement from the Galanolefki. Although it was expected, Zisis made his retirement official today. This has been yet another legend closing a chapter with the National team since Spanoulis announced his retirement at the end of Eurobasket 2015.

The 32 year old guard, who currently plays in Germany with Bamberg, has been a part of Greece’s National Basketball Teams since 1998. His 17 year career with the ethnosimo started with the Ethniki Paidon (U16, U17) and ended as captain of the Men’s National Team. Zisis was part of a “golden age” of Greek Basketball which included players like Papaloukas, Spanoulis, Diamantidis, Bourousis, to name a few.

Zisis made an impact on all Greek national teams and celebrated much success with them. He led the tournament in scoring in the 1999 FIBA Europe Under-16 Championship where Greece won the silver medal. One year later, Zisis was named to the All-Tournament team where Greece won the bronze medal in the 2000 FIBA Europe Under-18 Championship. His first gold medal with the youth national teams came in 2002 at the FIBA Europe Under-20 Championship. His first call up to the men’s first team came in 2001. Four years later at Eurobasket 2005, he led Greece in scoring and once again Greece rose to the top of European Basketball by defeating Germany in the Championship Game. After his impressive performance in the European Championships, he was named the FIBA Europe Young Player of the Year. Zisis was unfortunate during the 2006 FIBA World Championships as an injury during a game with Brazil left him out for the remainder of the tournament. Despite his injury, Greece finished 2nd in the competition, defeating the USA in semi-finals. At Eurobasket 2007 against Slovenia, Zisis, along with Papaloukas, led Greece to the biggest comeback in the tournament’s history. The Greeks came back from a 9 point deficit with 1:27 remaining to win the game. Zisis has competed in many other tournaments with the national team, including the Olympic Games in 2004 and 2008 where Greece finished 5th in the world both times.

With the announcing of his retirement, Zisis will not take part in Greece’s upcoming Pre-Olympic Qualifying tournament, where our national team will look to qualify for this summer’s Olympic Games. Zisis has been a staple for the national team over the years and our captain will be missed… Σε ευχαριτούμε, Thank You Niko for everything!
