GREEK SUPERLEAGUE PLAYOFFS - MATCHDAY 5
|AEK||0 - 0||PAOK|
AEK and POAK played to a 0-0 draw at the OAKA Stadium in Athens for the 5th matchday of the SuperLeague Playoffs. The draw keeps PAOK in first place in the Playoff Standings while AEK was mathematically eliminated for top spot. PAOK and Panathinaikos will play in Thessaloniki on matchday 6 for first place in the playoffs and the final Greek ticket to the UEFA Champions League!
PAOK was the better side at the beginning of the match and created great opportunities to score. The visitors hit the crossbar in the 10th minute and 7 minutes later, Anestis made a great save from Athanasiadis' close ranged shot. PAOK was left with 10 men after Tzavellas was sent off with a straight red in the 32nd minute. Tzavellas was the last man and fouled Pekhart as the AEK player broke through on goal. AEK lost their man advantage 4 minutes after the restart, when Pekhart was handed a second yellow card (arguable call) for his foul on Vitor. The sending off didn't seem to affect AEK as they pressed in PAOK's half. Aravidis missed two golden opportunities to open the score from set plays, however one shot went wide and the other hit the crossbar and stayed out. PAOK had the final opportunity of the match, 15 minutes before the end, when Katse's shot was brilliantly saved by Anesti. The goal-less draw remained at the final whistle.
The draw eliminates AEK from achieving top spot in the SuperLeague Playoffs and makes PAOK the favorites to finish in first. In the final matchday, a heated match is expected as PAOK will host second placed Panathinaikos. A draw or win will give PAOK first place while a win will only do for Panathinaikos. A reminder that first place in the SuperLeague Playoffs leads to a spot in next year's UEFA Champions League Qualifying. On the other hand, AEK will enter the UEFA Europa League 3rd qualifying round.
