- Karelis’ Hat-Trick Sends Genk to Europe -
Genk will be in next year’s Europa League thanks to Nikos Karelis! The Greek striker scored a hat-trick in Genk’s 5-1 victory over Ninis’ Charleroi in the final matchday of the Belgian Jupiler League Europa League Playoffs.
Genk had a difficult task tonight as they lost to Charleroi 2-0 in the first leg of the Jupiler League Europa League Playoffs. Things got off to a rough start for Charleroi as they were left with 10 men in the 17th minute and Genk was awarded a penalty. Karelis gave Genk the 1-0 lead from the spot and ten minutes later, Genk scored their second goal, leveling the scores on aggregate 2-2. Charleroi then found the all-important away goal and Genk was forced to score a minimum of 4 goals to advance. Karelis’ club was given hope in first half stoppage when they scored their 3rd goal of the night. Karelis came to the rescue once again and gave Genk the advantage on aggregate 4-3 (4-1 on the night) in the 56th minute with his second goal of the game. With 20 minutes remaining, Karelis found the back of the net for the third time, securing Genk’s win and their place in next year’s Europa League!
The Greek striker had a great season with Genk, scoring 10 goals for the club. For Charleroi, Ninis was on the bench but was not subbed into the match.
