Sevilla progressed to the UEFA Europa League Final after defeating Shakhtar Donetsk 3-1 in the second leg of the semi-finals. The two time defending champions will now play in their third straight Europa League Final where they will face Liverpool.

Sevilla were the favorites to advance after drawing Shakhtar 2-2 in Ukraine for the first leg. Things got off to a great start for the home side when Gameiro opened the score for Sevilla in the 9th minute. After the goal, Sevilla continued to control possession and they pressed in Shakhtar’s half. With three minutes remaining in the first period, Shakhtar made the match interesting when they equalized with Eduardo, against the run of play. Although the momentum was with Shakhtar, Gameiro scored his second goal of the match giving Sevilla the lead two minutes in the second half. Twelve minutes later, Mariano’s thunderous long-range strike found the back of the net, doubling Sevilla’s lead. With the two goal advantage, Sevilla controlled possession and ran out the clock until the final whistle.

The win gave the Spaniards a 5-3 advantage on aggregate and a ticket to their third straight Europa League Final. There, they will face Liverpool and will look to be the only team to have won the competition for three consecutive seasons.
