GREEK FOOTBALL LEAGUE - MATCHDAY 31

Kerkyra 2 - 0 Apollon Smyrnis
Chantzidis 54'
Souanis 68'

Kerkyra has returned to the SuperLeague! After a one year absence from the first division, “The Faiakes” mathematically clinched promotion with today’s 2-0 win over Apollon Smyrnis.

In a goalless first half, Kerkyra dominated possession and controlled the rhythm of the game. Nine minutes into the second half, Apollon Smyrnis’ keeper, Apostolidis, mishandled Chintzidis’ free-kick and the ball ended up in the back of the net. Kerkyra claimed the victory in the 68th minute when Souanis’ shot beat Apostolidis, giving the home side a 2-0 lead. Things grew worse for the visitors when Kone was given a red card in the 71st minute. Wanderson was sent off in the final minutes and the visitors were left with 9 men! The win puts Kerkyra 9 points ahead of 3rd placed Apollon Smyrnis and Trikala (drew yesterday 0-0 away to Panegialios), with 3 games remaining in the season. Kerkyra was relegated last year to the Football League and will now return to the SuperLeague after a one year absence.

In today’s other match between Acharnaikos and Chania, the game was abandoned in the 89th minute. One minute before the end, a questionable penalty was given to the visitors, causing an uproar from the home fans. During the incident, a bottle was thrown from the stands and injured the linesmen. This caused the head official to abandon the game and heavy consequences await Acharnaikos.
