UEFA EURO 2016 - GROUP E

Belgium 0 - 2 Italy
Giaccherini 32'
Pelle 90'+3'

Italy came away with a very important victory over group "favorites" Belgium in their opening match at UEFA Euro 2016. The Italians took an early lead and provided a defensive "seminar" against Belgium,  before securing their victory with a late goal.

Belgium took possession early in the half, threatening Buffon’s goal on a couple of occasions. The pace of the half was slow, something that worked to the advantage of the Italians. In the 32nd minute, Bonucci’s great long range ball was delightfully brought down by Giaccherini and his well placed shot gave Italy the 1-0 lead. Italy dominated the final 15 minutes of the half and the score remained 1-0 into the break. Lukaku missed a great one-on-one opportunity to bring Belgium level, but his strike went over the bar. Belgium controlled the possession in the second half, but the stubborn Italian defense gave little space to their opponent. After a chance for each team in the final 10 minutes, Pelle secured Italy’s victory, scoring a late goal in stoppage time.

The win puts Italy in first place of Group E while Belgium sit in last place with 0 points.
