Hungary Shock Austria, Iceland Steal a Point from Portugal

Hungary came away with a surprising victory in their opening match at UEFA Euro 2016. The Hungarians defeated Austria 2-0 and are well on their way to progress to the Last 16. This is Hungary’s first appearance at the European Championships since 1972, where they finished in 4th place. Austria threatened 30 seconds into the match, when Alaba’s strike hit the woodwork. Austria continued to press in the first half, but failed to score, ending the half 0-0. Hungary took the lead mid-way through the second half and a few minutes later, Austria was left with 10 men. Hungary, who was in Greece’s qualifying group, was the better side in the second half and secured their victory with a late goal. With the win Hungary sits in first place of Group F as Austria is in last with 0 points.

Fernando Santos’ Portugal got off to a poor start at UEFA Euro 2016, tying Iceland 1-1. Portugal dominated the first half, threatening Iceland’s goal on many occasions. The breakthrough came in the 30th minute when Nani’s shot beat Halldorson, giving Portugal the 1-0 lead. However, 5 minutes into the second half, Portugal’s defense went to sleep and Iceland pulled level 1-1. Portugal continued to dominate the game after the goal and looked for a winner, but the score remained 1-1 at the final whistle. Iceland earned an important point in their first ever match at the European Championships and are tied with Portugal in Group F.
