UEFA EURO 2016 - GROUP STAGE (GROUP C)

Ukraine 0 - 2 Northern Ireland
McAuley 49'
McGinn 90'+6'

Today's match between Northern Ireland and the Ukraine was a must win for both teams, since both were defeated in matchday one. Neither team created a good opportunity in the first half and the score remained 0-0 into halftime. Three minutes after the restart, McAuley’s header from Norwood’s free-kick gave Northern Ireland the lead and their first ever goal in the European Championships. Despite controlling possession in the second half, the Ukrainians failed to impress or threaten Northern Ireland’s goal. With Northern Ireland holding onto their 1-0 lead they locked their win with a second goal in stoppage time. McGinn gave N. Ireland the  2-0 victory and high hopes of progressing from Group C. After Germany’s draw with Poland, N. Ireland will have to get a result on the final matchday against Germany to advance in 2nd place or as a possible best 3-placed team.  As for the Ukraine, they are the first team to be mathematically eliminated from the Group Stage.

UEFA EURO 2016 - GROUP STAGE (GROUP C)

Germany 0 - 0 Poland

Both teams started the day on 3 points and led Group C (Germany had a small advantage due to goal differential). Similar to Group C’s earlier match between the Ukraine and Northern Ireland, the first half was quite uneventful. Poland came close to an opener one minute into the second half, but Milik's closed ranged header went slightly out. Germany kept possession of the ball, but only managed to create one good chance through Ozil in the 68th minute. There was a lack of urgency in the game as the draw satisfied both teams. The game ended 0-0 and both Germany and Poland look well on their way to advance from the Group Stage. Poland will face already eliminated Ukraine while Germany will play against the “outsiders” Northern Ireland in the final matchday of Group C.
