LEN CHAMPIONS LEAGUE - FINAL

Olympiacos 4 - 6 Dubrovnik
(1 - 1)
(2 - 3)
(3 - 4)
(4 - 6)

Olympiacos was defeated by Dobrovnik 6-4 for today’s LEN Champions League Final in Budapest. The Erythrolefki came close to completing the treble, winning all three titles (Domestic League, Domestic Cup, European Championship), but were handed their first defeat of the season in today’s European Championship Game.

After Olympiacos’ thrilling last second victory over Szolniki in yesterday’s semi-final, the Erythrolefki looked to finish the season undefeated and win the European Title. The first half was evenly played by both teams and Dubrovnik took a 3-2 lead into halftime with a late penalty goal. An early goal in the third quarter for Olympiacos leveled the scores, but in the final minute of the period, Dubrovnik pulled ahead 4-3. The fourth period had a similar course as the third quarter. Olympiacos equalized 4-4 and Dubrovnik responded re-taking the lead 5-4. The Erythrolefki looked for their 5th goal, but Dubrovnik’s goalie made great saves to keep his side in the lead. Olympiacos failed to score on their final chance of the game and Dubrovnik was awarded a late penalty. The Croatian side doubled their lead and secured the 2016 LEN Champions League Title.

Olympiacos failed to win the LEN Champions League Title at the same stadium they won the European Championship in 2002. At the Alfred Hajos Stadium they defeated Honved 9-7 on March 25 and were champions of Europe for the first time in their history. Additionally, this is Olympiacos only loss of the season in both Greece and Europe. With a win today, Olympiacos would have been the first team in Europe to finish the season undefeated in all competitions. A reminder that the Erythrolefki won this year’s Greek Double (Greek Water Polo League & Cup Title) and with a win today they would have completed the treble. An unfortunate end to a tremendous season....
