EUROVOLLEY 2017 QUALIFYING - PLAYOFF (LEG 1)
|Spain||3 - 0||Greece|
|(25 - 16)
(25 - 21)
(25 - 17)
Greece fell rather easily 3-0 set to Spain in the first leg of the EuroVolley 2017 Qualifying Playoff. Our National team will have an extremely tough task in their return leg to comeback and have hopes for qualifying for the 2017 European Championships.
The Spaniards, who recorded 3 wins and 3 losses in the group stage of qualifying, came out "on fire" and easily defeated Greece in the first set 25-16 to take a 1-0 lead. In the second set, Spain again gained and early advantage as Greece stayed close in the score. Unfortunately, Spain held onto their early 3-4 point lead from the beginning of the set to go up 2-0 in the match. The home side clearly had the momentum and with a push in the second half of the third set went on to win 25-17 and the match 3-0.
With the 3-0 win, Spain are now the clear favorites to advance to the EuroVolley Finals before next week's second leg in Greece. The "clean" win gives Spain 3 points from today's match. In the second leg, which will be held next Saturday (12:00 PM EST) in Greece, our National Team will need to defeat Spain with a "clean" score, either 3-0 or 3-1, to send the playoff into the "golden" or tie-breaker set. In that scenario, the first team to obtain 15 points (win by 2) will qualify for the EuroVolley Finals. Any other results will give Spain the ticket to the Finals.
If Greece forgets today's poor showing and puts on a performance similar to the group stages of qualifying, the Galanolefki can hope for the comeback in the second leg and qualify for their first European Championships since 2009.
