Panathinaikos played with “fire”, but was able to defeat Zalgiris 84-76 at the OAKA “Nick Galis” Stadium in their opening match for the 2016-2017 Euroleague Regular Season. Nikos Pappas was Panathinaikos’ best player, leading their late fourth quarter surge, and ultimately giving the Prasini the victory .

Panathinaikos hosted Zalgiris, one of the weaker teams in the Euroleague Regular season, in hopes of getting off to a positive start to the 2016-2017 season. The Greek Cup Champions took a small lead into halftime (37-30), but a great third quarter from the visitors saw them ahead 50-51 going into the fourth. In the opening minutes of the fourth quarter, both teams exchanged the lead, before two great defensive plays from Panathinaikos led to two 3-pointers on the other end, giving the Greek club a 69-62 advantage with 5 minute to play. Zalgiris pushed for a late comeback with Panathinaikos’ defense holding onto the lead and the 84-76 victory.

Nikos Pappas was on a terrific night for the Prasini scoring 19 points (only 2 missed shots from the field) and led them in their fourth quarter surge. Singleton scored important 3-pointers in the end while Calathes put up 13 points. Gist played a crucial role on the defensive end (especially in the fourth quarter) and Bourousis scored 11 points. Motum led the visitors with 19 points.

Panathinaikos will now turn their attention to the first big derby of the Greek A1 Basket League Season when they face Olympiacos on Monday. In Round 2 of the Euroleague, they will have their toughest test of the regular season when they travel to Moscow to play CSKA
