GREEK SUPERLEAGUE - MATCHDAY 7

Asteras Tripolis 2 - 0 Platanias
Vanderson (og) 65'
Kaltsas 84'

Asteras Tripolis earned their first victory of the season after defeating Platanias 2-0 at home. While it was Asteras Tripolis’ first 3 points of the year, it was Platanias’ first defeat of their 2016-2017 SuperLeague campaign. Vanderson’s own goal opened the score for Asteras while Kaltsas secured the hosts’ victory late in the second half. Platanias played with 10-men from the 55th minute after Stathis was handed his second yellow card of the game.

Asteras hosted Platanias in a must win match early in the season after suffering 4 defeats to start their 2016-2017 SuperLeague campaign. The first half was played at a good pace but there were minimal chances created by either team. The best opportunity of the half fell to Giakoumakis for the visitors, but his scissors kick effort did not trouble Kosicky.

Platanias had a great opportunity at the beginning of the second half to take the lead, but Kosicky came up with a great double-save to deny Gnjatic and Manoussos. Three minutes later (55th minute), Paraschos was furious with the referee when Stathis was given a second yellow card (in an odd play) leaving Platanias with 10-men for the remainder of the game. On the other end, Kaltsas was brought down in the box and the referee wrongfully did not award a penalty to the Arkades. The hosts began to look better as the game went on and in the 65th minute they found the breakthrough when Giannoulis’ cross-shot was denied by Sotiriou, but the Greek keeper was unlucky as the ball hit Vanderson and went in as an own goal. The goal (and man advantage) gave confidence to Asteras Tripolis as they created chances in Platanias’ half and with 6 minutes remaining, Kaltsas secured Asteras’ 2-0 victory with his tap-in goal from close-range.

The win moves Asteras Tripolis from the bottom of the table as they now sit on 3 points from 5 matches. Platanias’ 4-game unbeaten run comes to an end and the Cretan side will look to bounce back when they host Xanthi next week. Asteras will look to earn their second straight victory when they play away to Kerkyra next weekend.
