-- Atromitos Finding Their Stride with Korakaki --
GREEK SUPERLEAGUE - MATCHDAY 7
|Atromitos||1 - 0||Veria|
Atromitos recorded their second straight home victory after defeating Veria 1-0 at the Peristeri Stadium. Korakaki’s men took the lead with Tonso’s strike in the 26th minute and held onto their advantage despite heavy pressure from Veria in the second half. The win gives Atromitos an important 3 points, moving them up 9th in the SuperLeague standings.
The first half had few chances on goal for either side as Atromitos saw most of the possession. In the 26th minute, the hosts found the opener when Papadopoulos’ back-heeled pass set up Tonso in front of goal and with a powerful strike from close-range gave the home side the 1-0 lead. The goal gave Atromitos complete control of the match, taking their advantage into the break.
In the second half, Veria was the better side (Melikiotis missed a great opportunity to equalize) with Atromitos giving space to the visitors in hopes of defending the clean-sheet and lead. Veria controlled the possession without posing a threat to Atromitos’ goal, however as the half progressed Veria began to press in Atromitos’ half knowing a goal would at least salvage a point. The hosts’ failure to double their lead set them up for agonizing final minutes while Veria attempted to create a chance with long balls into the opposing penalty area. In the end, Veria did not find a good opportunity on goal and Atromitos celebrated their second consecutive home win of the season.
The now full-time manager of Atromitos, Georgios Korakaki, will be happy to walk away with yet another three-points since he took over the club. His side now sits in 9th place with 7 points. Veria, who held PAOK to a goalless draw in Matchday 7, have 4 points from 5 games and will host Panathinaikos next Monday. In Matchday 8, Atromitos will travel to Thessaloniki to face Iraklis.
