The Greek A1 Basket League new boys, Doxa Lefkadas, shocked PAOK in the first major upset of the new season, defeating the Dikefalos to Vora 84-78. Olympiacos had an easy night away to Koroivos while both Rethymno and Lavrio got off to a good start in the new season.
In their A1 Basket League debut, Doxa Lefkadas defeated PAOK 84-78 at home, completing the first major upset of the regular season. The hosts pulled ahead early in the game, reaching up to a 15-point lead in the third quarter, with PAOK tying the game late in the fourth quarter. However, many mistakes and missed shots from the Dikefalos tou Vora in the final minutes of the game allowed Doxa Lefkadas to once again pull ahead and ultimately shock PAOK with an 84-78 victory.
Olympiacos had an easy night away to Koroivos, defeating the team from Amaliada 66-88 in the first game of the Greek A1 Basket League season. Sfairiopoulos gave playing time to many players as a tough test away to Real Madrid awaits on Wednesday in the Euroleague. Lojeski and Green were Olympiacos’ leading scores with 18 and 16 points, respectively.
Aris easily defeated Trikala 75-65 in their Basket League opener in Thessaloniki. Aris took an early lead in the first half, was fantastic in the third quarter, but let up in the final quarter, allowing Trikala to cut in the lead to 10 by the end of the game. The game was decided early on, with Aris’ biggest lead at 25 points in the third quarter.
Rethymno got off to a great to start to the new season coming away with a 66-74 away win against Kolossos Rodou. Rethymno took an early and decisive advantage (up by 19 points in the first half) and comfortably kept their lead throughout the game, ultimately giving them the victory. Rethymno struggled away from home last season and will hope that today’s result will be indicative of a better away record this season.
Lavrio defeated the newly promoted side Kymi 75-69 in their A1 Basket League opener. The hosts took a commanding 18-point lead in the third quarter, but a 7-0 run at the end of the third quarter cut Lavrio’s lead to 11 points. Kymi continued their explosive run in the fourth quarter (10-2) cutting the lead to 3 points, however Lavrio regained control of the game and came away with a 75-69 victory.
