(43 - 48)
(62 - 66)
PAOK was the winner in the Greek Basket League’s big derby by defeating their city rivals, Aris, 62-66. It was a true derby in Thessaloniki and a thrilling match as PAOK recorded their second consecutive victory in the Basket League.
After an even first quarter between the two sides, PAOK took a small 6-point lead in the second quarter before a late push from Aris cut PAOK’s lead to one at halftime. PAOK regained their small advantage in the third quarter taking a 5-point lead into the final 10-minutes. The 4th quarter was a thrilling showdown between the two sides as the home supporters created a heated atmosphere. PAOK was ahead for most of the quarter before Aris found themselves ahead 62-61 with 35 seconds remaining. A game-winning defensive play from PAOK’s Chrisikopoulos on Dragisevic resulted in an anti-athletic (flagrant) foul on the Aris player, which ultimately led PAOK to a massive 62-66 win.
Today’s result is an extremely important one for PAOK not only for their place in the standings, but for their morale after a loss in their Basket League opener to Doxa Lefkadas and their midweek loss to Polish side, Rosa Radom, in the FIBA Champions League. It is PAOK’s second consecutive victory in the Basket League as Aris was handed their second defeat in two games.
