Never undermine Panathinaikos! As the Trifylli trailed Bamberg by 10 points (83-73) with 4 minutes remaining, the Exastero went on a 11-0 run to finish the game and come away with a thrilling 83-84 win. The winning shot was scored by Nick Calathes with 4 seconds remaining, handing Panathinaikos their second win in this year’s Euroleague and their first under their new boss Xavi Pascual.
Panathinaikos was in control of the game during the first half, but a poor third quarter allowed Bamberg to pull away by 10-points (54-44). Panathinaikos responded and brought the game back on level terms, going into the final 10 minutes only behind by 1 point. However, Panathinaikos’ problems in the defense along with multiple turnovers allowed Bamberg to retake a double digit lead, 83-73, with 4 minutes to play. It was then Panathinaikos’ time to dominate going on a 9-0 run and cutting Bamberg's lead to 1 point, before Nick Calathes scored the winning bucket with 4 seconds to play, giving Panathinaikos the 83-84 win.
The MVP of the match was also the hero, Nick Calathes, who came extremely close to a triple double finishing with 13 points, 11 rebounds, and 9 assists while Rivers stopped at 18 points. Bamberg’s star and former Greek captain, Nikos Zisis, scored 13 points for his side.
Xavi Pascual, who headed Panathinaikos for the first time since signing with the club, will use today’s win as “restart” for the Trifylli’s season. On Friday, they will face Crvena Zvezda at the OAKA Nick Galis Stadium for the fourth round of the Euroleague Regular Season.
