-- More of the Same from Panathinaikos… --
GREEK SOCCER CUP - GROUP STAGE (group c)
|Panathinaikos||0 - 0||Iraklis|
Like Panathinaikos’ previous two matches in Greece against Xanthi and Veria, the Trifylli wasted numerous chances on goal, playing to a goalless draw against Iraklis in their opening Cup fixture.
Against Iraklis, Panathinaikos wanted to put on a convincing performance accompanied with many goals and a large margin of victory in hopes of putting behind them two disappointing results in the Superleague against Xanthi and Veria. Panathinaikos did dominate the game and pinned Iraklis in their half, however the Trifylli was unable to find the back of the net, wasting countless chances on goal. Specifically, Rinaldi had the best opportunities to find the breakthrough for his side, however he was unable to do so. The Prasini were also unhappy with the refereeing by Karadonis as they feel they should have been awarded penalties in the 31st and 39th minutes with challenges on Ibarbo and M’Boku, respectively. The frustration was evident at the Apostolos Nikolaidis Stadium as the final whistle came and Panathinaikos remained winless for a third straight match in domestic competitions.
Today’s performance was deja vu for the Panathinaikos fans as they saw their club dominate yet another game without scoring multiple goals and coming away with a comfortable win. As for Iraklis, who sit bottom of the Superleague standings, fought hard in yet another match and will use the momentum from this result to earn their first victory in the Superleague this weekend. After matchday 1 in Group C, Apollon Smyrnis lead the table after their victory against OFI.
