EUROVOLLEY 2017 QUALIFYING (PLAYOFF, LEG 2)

Greece 3 - 2 Spain
(20 - 25)
(25 - 22)
(25 - 14)
(26 - 28)
(17 - 15)

The Greek National Volleyball Team defeated Spain 3-2 set in the second leg of the EuroVolley qualifying playoff. Unfortunately, the win was not enough for Greece to qualify as they lost the first leg 3-0 and were eliminated from the competition.

After Greece lost the first leg in Spain 3-0, our National Team needed to win today's match 3-0 or 3-1 to send the game into the golden set. A win for Spain or a 3-2 loss would give Spain the ticket to Eurovolley 2017. In the opening set, a late run gave Spain the 20-25 victory and early 0-1 set lead. Greece knew another set loss would mean elimination and in the second set our National Team came away with a 25-22 victory, tying the match 1-1. Greece used their momentum from the second set to dominate the third set, coming away with an easy 25-14 win.

With Greece ahead 2-1, a win in the fourth set would send the game into the golden set while a win for Spain would give them the ticket to EuroVolley 2017. Spain got off to a better start and kept their lead for most of the set. With the scores at 23-24 in favor of Spain, Greece stayed alive tying the scores 24-24. It was the same scenario with Spain ahead 24-25, then 25-26, and 26-27. Unfortunately at 26-27, Spain won the next point, winning the fourth set 26-28, tying match 2-2 and securing Spain's place in EuroVolley 2017. The match went into the meaningless tie-breaker set where Greece won 17-15 and the match 3-2.

Unfortunately after today's result, our National team will need to wait until 2019 to once again have an opportunity to qualify for the European Championships. Greece has not qualified for the European Championships since 2009.
