UEFA U-19 EURO 2017 QUALIFYING - QUALIFYING ROUND
|Wales U19||0 - 2||Greece U19|
The Greek U-19 National Team got off to a great start in Euro 2017 Qualifying by defeating Wales 0-2 in Wednesday’s qualifier. Both goals came in the second half through Mingos and Nikolaou.
UEFA U-19 Euro 2017 Qualifying kicked off in group 6 as Greece played against Wales, the host nation in the first mini-tournament of qualifying. After an even first half, which did not produce any goals, the Greek team found the breakthrough in the second half with Mingos’ goal in the 59th minute. After falling behind, Wales pressed on for an equalizer but it was Greece who secured all three points when Mingos was the provider to Nikolaou, who doubled Greece’s lead in the 78th minute. The Galanolefki held onto their 2-goal victory, earning an important 3 points to begin their qualifying campaign.
The first round of qualifying, called the Qualifying Round, consists of groups of four teams competing at a single venue (in this case Wales) as each team faces the other once. At the end of 3-games, the top two advance (and the best 3rd placed team) to the second and final phase of qualifying called the Elite Round.
Today’s victory is an important one for Greece as it gives the Ethniki Neon the clear advantage to finish in the top two spots of group 6. On November 12th, they will play Luxembourg (who lost to England today) knowing that a win will give them the ticket to the Elite Qualifying Round.
