-- First Win for Cyprus in Qualifying --
FIFA WORLD CUP QUALIFYING - GROUP H (MATCHDAY 4)
|Cyprus||3 - 1||Gibraltar|
Cyprus earned their first victory of FIFA World Cup Qualifying by defeating Gibraltar 3-1. It was yet another unconvincing performance from the Cypriots, who now have 3 points from four matches.
It was a derby between the two last placed teams in Group H as Cyprus hosted Gibraltar in matchday 4 of World Cup Qualifying. The Cypriots, who were the clear favorites to get a result, opened the scoring in the 27th minute with Laifis. However, six minutes into the second half, the hosts were stunned when awful goalkeeping and defending led to an equalizer from Casciaro. It was a historic goal from Gibraltar as it was the nation’s first goal away from home in their team’s history.
The Cypriots quickly pulled things together and creating many chances to score the go-ahead goal. In the 65th minute, Sotiriou took advantage of poor defending and found the back of the net to give Cyprus a 2-1 lead. The hosts sealed all three points in the 87th minute when Sielis’ header from Charalambidis’ corner gave Cyprus the 3-1 victory.
Today’s win is Cyprus’ first points in group play after 4 games. They now sit in 4th place in group H, tied with Estonia on 3 points, but ahead with a better goal differential. Their next match will be at home to Estonia on March 25th. Gibraltar remain without any points after their fourth loss and will travel to Bosnia for their next match in qualifying.
