Led by their “big” man” Ioannis Bourousis, Panathinaikos defeated Darussafaka 86-80 in the 9th Round of the Euroleague. Bourousis was the key player for the hosts as they recorded their 5th victory of the season.
Panathinaikos was well in control of the game in the first half as they took a 12-point lead into halftime (46-34). In the third quarter, Darussafaka got back into the game and cut Panathinaikos’ lead to two points (58-56), but Bourousis kept the hosts slightly ahead in the score. The game came down to the wire in the fourth quarter and with 3 minutes remaining, Darussafaka took the lead 76-77. Calathes re-gave Panathinaikos the one-point advantage 78-77 and a forced turnover from Singleton increased the Trifylli’s lead to three points, 80-77. With less than 15 seconds remaining and Panathinaikos ahead 80-78, Bourousis ultimately sealed his side’s victory with a follow-up bucket and two-free throws as Panathinaikos went on to win 86-80.
Panathinaikos’ best player on the night was Bourousis who finished the game with 18-points while coming up big (offensively and defensively) in critical points of the match. Rivers followed with 13-points, Pappas put up 12-points, and Calathes added 11-points despite having an off night from the field (5/16). Clyburn, who was not subbed off during the game, led the visitors with 26-points.
The win moves Panathinaikos to 5-4 int this year’s Euroleague along with Darussafaka. The Greek Cup Champions will have a difficult test in Round 10 when they travel to Spain to play Giorgos Bartzokas’’ Barcelona.
