-- Sotiriou Sends APOEL to the Top of Group B --
UEFA EUROPA LEAGUE - GROUP B (MATCHDAY 4)
|APOEL||1 - 0||Young Boys|
APOEL defeat Young Boys 1-0 in Nicosia for the 4th matchday of the Europa League and went atop Group B. The only goal of the game was scored by Sotiriou in the 69th minute.
APOEL wasted many chances to go ahead in the first half, with Sotiriou’s effort hitting the woodwork in the 30th minute and six minutes later, Efrem could not find the back of the net in a one-on-one opportunity with the goalkeeper. In the second half, it was more of the same for APOEL as the hosts looked more of a threat to find an opener. In the 67th minute, Young Boys was left with 10-men when Mbabu was sent off with a straight red only minutes after being subbed on. It only took APOEL a couple of minutes to use their man-advantage and find the opener when Sotiriou converted from close-range with a left-footed shot. The hosts had opportunities to put the game away with a second goal but APOEL held on to earn their third win of the group stages.
Today’s three points send APOEL atop Group B with 9 points while Olympiacos, who drew Astana 1-1 earlier today, sit in second with 7 points. Both APOEL and Olympiacos are the clear favorites to move on from Group B and the only question that remains is who will top the group.
