Olympiacos traveled to Thessaloniki to face off against Aris in the Basket League’s derby in Round 5. After an even first quarter, a 10-0 run for Olympiacos in the second quarter gave the Erythrolefki a double digit lead at halftime (34-44).

At the beginning of the third quarter, Kostas Papanikolaou converted from behind the arch to put his former team further behind and give Olympiacos a 36-52 lead. A 9-0 run led by Aris’ best player of the game, Dragicevic, brought the hosts back in the game and cut Olympiacos’ lead to 7 points going into the final 10 minutes. Aris came within two at the beginning of the fourth quarter, but a burst from Olympiacos increased their lead to double digits once again (56-66). The difference was too large for the Kitrinomavri to overcome and Olympiacos held on to a 63-70 victory, remaining perfect after five games in the Greek Basket League.

The MVP of the game was Khem Birch who finished with a double-double scoring 10 points and getting 12 rebounds. Spanoulis also finished the game with a double-double putting up 13 points and dishing 11 out of Olympiacos’ 14 assists. Kostas Papanikolaou came through big in the third quarter going 3/4 from behind the arch and Lojeski added an important 12 points. Dragicevic was Aris' best player scoring 18 points and picking up 8 rebounds.

Olympiacos is now 5-0 in the Greek Basket League as Aris falls below 0.500 to 2-3. Next weekend, Olympiacos will have a theoretically easy game against Apollon Patras at the Stadio Erinis kai Filias  (also travels to play Galatasaray midweek for the Euroleague) while Aris is on the road against Koroivos.

In the other match of the day, Panathinaikos easily defeated Doxa Lefkadas 46-73.
