Christos Tasoulis’ second half goal separated Panionios and Kerkyra at the final whistle as Panionios went on to defeat the islanders 1-0. The win moves Panionios back into the top 5 of the Superleague standings.
The first half was played at a quick pace and chances fell to both teams for an opener. Thuram led Kerkyra’s attack and came close with a powerful shot that just missed the target after a great solo effort. On the other end, Panionios’ best opportunity came when they were awarded an indirect free-kick inside the penalty area, but the powerful shot from Ben was blocked Koutsovasilis and the first half ended goalless.
At the beginning of the second half, Panionios pinned Kerkyra in their half and the breakthrough came in the 62st minute. A poor clearance from Kerkyra’s defense set up Tasoulis, who will a powerful, well-placed shot gave Panionios the 1-0 lead. The hosts had opportunities to double their lead, but Ben was unable to convert his chances in 69th and 87th minute. Kerkyra almost punished Panionios in stoppage time when Georgakopoulos’ shot inside the penalty deflected for a corner and from the ensuing set-play Doualla’s header just missed the target.
The win moves Panionios back to fifth in the Superleague Standings on 18 points while Kerkyra sit with 12 points. Next week, Panionios will travel to levadiakos while Kerkyra will have a tough home test against PAOK.
