AGONAsport.com breaks down Olympiacos’ opponent, Osmanlispor,  in the UEFA Euopra League Round of 32.

Background: Osmanlispor was formed in 1978 and is based out of Ankara, Turkey. However, they are not the most popular team in the city as most citizens support Ankaragucu or Genclerbirligi. Their home ground is the Osmanlı Stadyumu which seats 19,000 people. The current name refers to Osman I, founder of the Ottoman Empire, and team’s colors are black and yellow.

How They Got Here: This season was the club’s second appearance in UEFA’s competitions. They began their campaign in the UEFA Europa League second qualifying round where they defeated Moldovan side Zimbru Chisinau 7-2 on aggregate and in the third qualifying round, they defeated Estonian club Nomme Kalju 3-0 on aggregate. They earned a ticket to the group stages after surpassing Midtjylland 3-0 after two legs. In the group stages, they surprisingly finished first in Group L with 10 points ahead of Villarreal, Salzburg, and Zurich. They drew Villarreal 2-2 in Turkey and shocked the Spanish Club in Spain after a 1-2 victory. They defeated Steaua (2-0) and Zurich (2-0) at home, but fell on the road to both teams with the same scoreline, 2-1.

League Standings: Last year Osmanlispor finished in 5th place in the Turkish Super Lig (14-10-10) and they currently sit in 7th in this year’s standings (5-7-2).

Coach: Mustafa Resit Akcay

Players to Note: Romania striker Raul Rusescu, Cameroonian striker Pierre Webó

Prior History with Olympiacos: The two teams have never met.

Fixtures: Olympiacos will host Osmanlispor on February 16th at the Karaiskakis Stadium for the first leg and the return fixture will be held one week later in Turkey.
