-- GOALLESS "BATTLE" --
GREEK SUPERLEAGUE - MATCHDAY 15
|Larissa||0 - 0||Panathinaikos|
In a game that seemed more of a “battle” than a football match, Larissa and Panathinaikos played to a goalless draw. The 90 minutes of play were full of tension with seven yellow cards between the two teams and one sending off (Zeca). Panathinaikos dropped to -9 behind Olympiacos in the title race.
The tone of the match was set in the opening 10 minutes as both teams played extremely rough and committed many fouls on their opposition. It was no coincidence that the first half highlights were filled with these instances rather than a chance on goal.
It was more of the same at the beginning of the second half, but in the 50th and 52nd minutes Larissa created the best chances of the match with Deletic and Dodo’s efforts missing the target. Berg responded with an opportunity of his own, but his shot went well over the bar.
With neither team posing a threat to find the breakthrough, the “war” continued with Zeca’s off the ball foul in the 80th minute, resulting in a straight red for the captain (likely to miss the derby against AEK). Three minutes from time, Fatjon was lucky to not see a red card after an anti-athletic foul on Vlachodimos. During second half stoppage time, Xenodochof was called into action for the first time on the night to deny Leto the late winner as the two teams were awarded a point from today’s match.
The result does not benefit either side with Larissa fighting for survival while Panathinaikos fall further behind in the title race. The Prasini are now nine points behind the league leaders, Olympiacos (defeated Panetolikos earlier today), and are slowly watching their titles hope fade away. Larissa are two points clear of the drop zone.
