-- Derby Avoided in the Cup Draw --
The Greek Cup Round of 16 draw did not produce a big derby as Panathinaikos avoided Olympiacos, PAOK, and AEK. Olympiacos and Aris will be the most anticipated pair in the round.
The stage is set for the Greek Cup Round of 16 after today’s draw. The big derby was avoided as Panathinaikos could have been paired with Olympiacos, PAOK, or AEK. However, the Prasini were lucky to draw Kissamikos from the seeded pot. PAOK drew Panetolikos while AEK was paired with Levadiakos.
The most anticipated encounter will be between Olympiacos and Aris. Although Aris currently plays in the Football League, they are one of the heavy favorites to gain promotion to next season’s Superleague. The other fixtures will include OFI/Xanthi, Platanias/PAS Giannina, Trikala/Asteras Tripolis, and Lamia/Atromitos.
The knockout phase will take place over two legs, home and away, and the team with the most goals on aggregate (over both legs) will advance to the next round. In the case of a tie, the away goals rule will be applied. The Round of 16 matches will take place January 10-12 with the return legs are scheduled for two weeks later on January 24-26.
