-- FIRST HOME WIN OF THE SEASON FOR XANTHI --
GREEK SUPERLEAGUE - MATCHDAY 13
|Xanthi||3 - 1||Asteras Tripolis|
Xanthi celebrated their first win (and goal) at home this season after defeating Asteras Tripolis 3-1 at the Pigadia. The hosts made the most of their opportunities in the first half scoring three goals with Vasilakakis, Younes, and Lazic. Ioannidis added a consolation goal early in the second half for Asteras Tripolis.
It was a fantastic opening 30 minutes for the hosts as they found the back of the net on their first three chances of the game. In the 2nd minute, Vasilakakis gave Xanthi the 1-0 lead with his header from a corner, scoring Xanthi's first goal at home this season. Asteras Tripolis saw most of the possession in the first half and had opportunities to equalize, but it was Xanthi who made the most of their chances. The hosts constructed a great counterattack in the 14th minute that led to Younes’ strike that deflect in the goal, doubling Xanthi’s lead. Tripolis continued to see most of the ball, but it was Xanthi who struck again on the counterattack, this time with Blazic for a 3-0 lead by the half-hour mark. Despite Asteras having 75% possession in the first half, Xanthi was ahead 3-0 with 3 shots on goal.
In the second half, Xanthi sat back and defended their lead while leaving space for Asteras to create on the attack. The visitors only managed to pull one back in the 53rd minute with Ioannidis’ strike. In the final 20 minutes, Xanthi had two opportunities to increase their lead, but Donnarrumma kept the scoreline at 3-1 at the final whistle.
The win pushes Xanthi up to 16-points along with AEK while Asteras Tripolis remains near the bottom of the table with 10 points. Next weekend, Xanthi will look for their second consecutive home victory against Larissa while Asteras will hope to bounce back at home to Veria.
