Panathinaikos lost a game they should have won, falling to UNICS Kazan 83-81 for the 15th round of the Euroleague. The Trifylli had a 14-point lead in the third quarter, but were unable to come away with the victory bringing their four game winning streak to an end. Their record now 9-6 midway through the season.
A little bit of everything contributed to Panathinaikos’ 83-81 defeat to UNICS Kazan in Russia for the Euroleague. The Prasini were in control in the first half and took a 9-point lead into halftime (35-44). A 5-0 run to start the third quarter gave Panathinaikos their biggest lead of the night at 35-49. However, Panathinaikos’ below par defense allowed UNICS Kazan to get back into the game, cutting the lead to only two points (63-65) heading into the final 10 minutes.
The match come down to the wire as the two teams exchanged the lead in the final quarter. With the game tied at 78-78, Colom hit a 3-pointer for the hosts putting them ahead 81-78 and an alley-oop from Williams put UNICS ahead by 5-points (83-78). Rivers’ shot from behind the arch brought Panathinaikos back within two points ( 83-81) and the Greek club had a chance at the end to win the game, but Nichols’ three-pointer at the buzzer came up short.
Nick Calathes had an incredible game setting a new scoring career high in the Euroleague with 23-points (6 assists). Bourousis and James also had a good game adding 13-points each. The MVP of the match was UNICS Kazan’s Langford who put up 27-points while dishing 5-assists.
The loss brings Panathinaikos’ four game Euroleague winning streak to an end as they sit 5th in the standings with a 9-6 record. Their next matchup will be after the new year against their big rivals, Olympiacos.
