The first Knockout Stage match at UEFA Euro 2016 was a thriller as Poland defeated Switzerland on penalties to advance to the Quarter-Finals. Poland took the lead in the first half before a late equalizer from Switzerland sent the game to overtime. Penalties decided the match after a goalless extra time and Poland now awaits the winner of the match between Croatia and Portugal.
Poland was the better side in the first half and were gifted an opportunity in the opening minute by the Swiss defense, but Milik’s shot went over the bar. Poland continued to press Switzerland and in the 39th minute Blaszcykowski opened the score with a right-footed shot. After Grosicki’s great individual effort, his cross found Blaszcykowski at the back post and he converted to give Poland the 1-0 lead. In the second half, the pace of the game fell as Fabianski made a great save in the 51st minute to keep Poland ahead. In the finla 15 minutes, Switzerland pressed in Poland’s half and in the 82nd minute Switzerland found their equalizer. A poorly cleared ball by the Polish defense landed to Shaquri, who’s bicycle kick goal from outside the box was perfectly placed to beat Fabianski. The possible “Goal of the Tournament” sent the game to extra time. Switzerland created the best chance in overtime but Fabianski once again came to the rescue with a spectacular save from Derdiyok’s header. After a goalless extra time period the match went into penalties. In penalties, Switzerland and Poland each scored their first penalty, but Switzerland’s second penalty by Xhaka went well wide. The next 7 penalties were all successfully converted and Krychowiak’s final penalty for Poland sent his side through to the quarterfinals.
Poland will now play the winner of the match between Croatia and Portugal on June 30th for a place in the semi-finals.
