It looked as if it was going to be a long night for Hungary when Belgium took the lead in the 10th minute. De Bruyne’s in-swinging free-kick was met by Alderweireland and his powerful header put Belgium ahead 1-0. Belgium continued to dominate the game and created numerous chances to double their lead, but were unable to finish in the final third. Hungary also threatened in the match and had hopes of sparking a comeback after the first half ended 1-0. In the the first 20 minutes of the second half, Hungary pressed for an equalizer, but like Belgium, were unable to convert their chances. With both teams failing to find the back of the ner, the score remained 1-0. A defensive lapse by Hungary, after clearing Belgium’s corner, was enough to give Belgium their second goal. Hazard’s cross from the left side was easily tapped in by Batshuayi, securing Belgium’s place in the quarter-finals. Hazard then completed a great individual effort to give Belgium a 3-0 lead before Carsco capped off an emphatic 4-0 victory for Belgium.
Although a late run shaped the final result, Belgium will be the heavy favorites in their quarter-final match against Wales. The two teams met up in qualifying where Belgium won the group and Wales finished in second. Hungary, who progressed from Greece’s qualifying group, ends a great campaign at Euro 2016, topping Group F over teams like Portugal and Austria. Despite winning their group, Hungary was unfortunate to face a world class team like Belgium in the first round of the Knockout Stages.
