Three second half goals from APOEL gave the Cypriots the 3-0 victory over The New Saints to advance to the UEFA Champions League 3rd Qualifying Round. The first leg ended 0-0 in Wales.
Despite dominating the game and creating numerous chances (including a crossbar in the 38th minute), the first half ended in a goalless draw. The breakthrough came in the 54th minute when Alexandrou's shot from outside the penalty area took a fortunate deflection, giving APOEL the 1-0 lead. The goal opened the way for APOEL as they continued to create and waste many chances (hitting the woodwork again) before doubling their lead in the 72nd minute with Sotiriou. The two goal lead was a comfortable advantage for the hosts as The New Saints had trouble creating anything on the attack. The night was capped off in great fashion when De Vincente converted a penalty in stoppage time to give APOEL the 3-0 victory.
In the 3rd Qualifying round, APOEL will face the winner between Rosenborg and IFK Norrkoping. The first leg will be played away on July 26th or 267h and the return leg will be held in Cyprus on August 2nd or 3rd. Rosenborg and IFK Norrkoping will play the second leg tomorrow with Rosenborg taking a 3-1 lead to Sweden from the first leg.
