Croatia defeated Greece 66-61 in the knockout phase of the Olympic Qualifying Tournament. The defeat leaves Greece out of the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro.
Croatia took the early in the game and were clearly the more confident team between the two sides. A nearly perfect offensive display by Croatia accompanied with a tragic Greek defense gave Croatia a 18 point lead at the end of the 1st quarter. Croatia implemented their fast pace and the Greeks could not keep up. The second quarter started like the first, with Croatia increasing their advantage to 24 points. However, Greece was able to respond by slowly cutting the lead through their conversion on the offensive end and much improved defense. The good display from Greece in the second quarter put them behind by only 10 at halftime.
Greece picked up where they left off in the second quarter and Croatia saw their lead slowly fade. With Croatia scoring only 2 points in the first 7 minutes of the third quarter, Greece took a one point lead. A late run from Croatia put them ahead by 3 points going into the final quarter. A cold streak from Greece in the 4th quarter allowed Croatia to pull away by 11 points midway through the quarter. Greece’s late comeback brought the game down to 4 points, but the lead was too much to overcome and Croatia came away with the 61-66 victory. They will play the winner of the match between Italy and Mexico for a place in this summer’s Olympic Games.
Greece will miss out in their second straight Olympic Games after failing to qualify in 2012.
