DAY 5, WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 10TH

AGONAsport.com brings you a preview of all of Greece’s Athletes competing in Day 5 (Wednesday, August 10) of the Rio 2016 Summer Olympic Games. For an in-depth preview of all of Greece’s athletes click here. **All time are listed in EST (New York) which is 7 hours behind the local Greek time.

 

TODAY'S COMPETING GREEK ATHLETES
 

Fencing - Women's Individual Foil, Multiple Rounds (7:30 AM): Aikaterini Kontochristopoulou
***Kontochristopoulou makes her debut at Rio 2016 in the Round of 64 of the Women's Individual Foil event. She will face off against Do Anh from China. If she wins she will advance to the Round of 32 at 8:10 AM to face Arriana Erigo from Italy. If Kontochristopoulou continues to win she will play in the Round of 16 (10:00 AM), Quarter-Finals (11:00 AM), and Semi-finals (4:30 AM). The 3rd place match is scheduled for 6:20 PM and the Gold Medal Match is at 7:15 PM. 

Rowing – Men's Coxless Four, Semi-final A (8:30 AM): Angelopoulos, Christou, Tsilis & Tziallas
***The Men's rowing team will race in the first semi-final with hopes of a top 3 finish which will lead to a place in Friday's Final (Medal) round. In the qualifying round they finished 5th overall.

Water Polo - Men's Tournament, Group A (9:20 AM): Greece
***Greece will look for their third victory in Group play against a difficult opponent, Hungary. Greece currently sits 2nd in the group and a win today will send them one step closer to first place in the Group A.

Judo - Men's 90kg, Multiple Rounds (10:10 AM): Ilias Iliadis
***Greece's 4-time Olympian Ilias Iliadis makes his debut at Rio 2016 in the Round of 32 of the Men's 90kg Judo event. He will face Cheng Xunzhao from China. If Iliadis wins he will advance to the round of 16 at 11:06 AM. If Iliadis makes a run in the competition, which is very possible, he will play in the Quarter-Finals at 11:41 AM with a win sending him to the semi-finals at 3:12 PM.  If he loses in the quarter-finals he will going to the repechage bracket (first match at 2:44 PM)  with hopes of a bronze medal (3:47 PM). The repechage bracket will begin in the quarter-finals with all defeated athletes having a second opportunity for a bronze medal. If he goes undefeated through the semi-finals he will play for his second Olympic Medal at 4:01 PM. 

Sailing – Men’s 470, Preliminary Races (12:05 PM, 1:30 PM): Kagialis & Maniatis
***Kagialias & Maniatis will begin in the preliminary races of the event.

Sailing – Men’s Finn, Preliminary Races(12:05 PM, 1:05 PM): Ioannis Mitakis
***Mitakis will continue in the Finn Event after finishing 18th after the first 2 races.

Sailing – Mixed-Narca 17, Preliminary Races (12:05 PM, 1:30 PM, 2:05 PM): Bekatorou & Petaniotis
***Greece's flag bearer Sofia Bekatorou and Michali Petaniotis will begin in the preliminary races of the event.

 Swimming – Men’s 200m Backstroke, Heat 3 (12:35 PM): Apostolos Christou
***Chrsitou will compete in the heat qualifying round with the hopes of a top 16 finish to qualify for the semi-finals. He will swim in Lane 7 of Heat 3. If he qualifies for the semi-finals he will race at 9:28 PM for a place in the final.

 Swimming – Men’s 200m Medley, Heat 3 (1:19 PM): Andreas Vazaios
***The European Champion Andreas Vazaios makes his debut at Rio 2016 in the 3rd Heat racing in Lane 6. He will be one of the favorites to finish in the top 16 and earn a place in the semi-finals. The semi-finals will take place later in the day at 10:29 PM. 


*Please note that Heats are considered qualifying rounds while FINAL rounds are the “medal” rounds.
