- Bento to be Announced Tomorrow by Olympiacos -
Paulo Bento will be the new coach of Olympiacos. Victor Sanchez was sacked by the club on Tuesday after Olympiacos' elimination in Champions League Qualifying. Bento has already agreed to everything with the Greek Champions and will be officially announced tomorrow.
Paulo Bento began his coaching career in 2005 at Sporting Lisbon. He was with Sporting for four years, winning the Portuguese Cup on two occasions. In 2010, he took over the Portuguese National team leading them to Euro 2012 and the 2014 World Cup. In 2012, Bento took Portugal to the the semi-finals of the tournament where they fell to Spain on penalties. After a successful Euro 2012 campaign, Portugal had a short run at the 2014 World Cup as they were eliminated in the Group stages. Their poor showing at the 2014 World Cup, along with a 0-1 home defeat to Albania in their opening Euro 2016 qualifying match, led to the parting of ways between the Portuguese Football Association and Paulo Bento. His final stop before Olympiacos was in Brazil with Cruzeiro where he began in May 2016 and was released a few weeks ago.
Bento is expected to sign a 2-year contract until the summer of 2018. He will be the fourth Portuguese coach in Olympiacos’ history after Leonardo Jardim, Victor Pereira, and Marco Silva. He will begin practices with the club on Thursday and will be in charge of his first match in Saturday's’ friendly against Aris.
