Greece danced “Samba” around Brazil...The National Water Polo team defeated Brazil 9-4 in the first place clash of Group A. The Greek team dominated the hosts and clinched a spot in the Quarter-finals of the competition. Australia will be Greece’s final opponent in Group A and a Greek win will give them first place in the group.
Brazil has been the surprise team of the Men’s Water Polo Tournament after 3 wins from 3 matches, including a shocking victory over the World Champions Serbia. Greece got off to a great start in the match taking a 3-1 lead after the first 8 minutes. Felgas came away with great saves to keep Greece ahead after a 1-1 draw in the 2nd period (4-2). In the 3rd period, Greece scored two goals early on to go ahead 6-2 (at this point six different Greek scorers) and had a comfortable 7-4 lead going into the final period. Dervisis and Fountoulis’ goals along with a “clean sheet” in the final period gave Greece the 9-4 victory over the hosts.
Fountoulis, Dervisis, and Gounas each scored 2 goals for the Galanolefki while Afroudakis, Genidounias, and Delakas found the net on one occasion. Throughout the game, Greece’s defense was quite impressive as they did not concede a single goal on the man disadvantage.
With the win, Greece mathematically secures their place in the quarter-finals along with Brazil. Our National Team currently sits atop of Group A and with a win against Australia on the final matchday (Sunday), they will earn first place in the group. As group winners, they will have a theoretically easier opponent (from Group B) in the quarter-finals in hopes for a place in the tournament’s semi-finals.
