The Greek National Water Polo team was handed their first defeat at the Rio 2016 Olympics after a poor showing against Australia. The Aussies came away with a rather easy 12-7 victory and kept their hopes alive to advance to the quarterfinals. Greece will not finish atop of Group A and will await the results from the other group matches later today.
After an emphatic victory over Brazil, Greece looked to clinch first place in Group A with a victory over Australia. Greece got off to a rough start going down 5-3 in the first period. The Greek defense gave up more goals in the first period against Australia than they did in the four periods against Brazil. It was a tragic second period for the Greek defense, giving up another five goals and only scoring one. Surprisingly, Australia went into half time ahead 10-4.
Greece improved defensively in the third period, keeping Australia off the board, but only managed to score one goal on the other end. The 5 goal Australian lead was too much to overcome in the final eight minutes with Greece falling 12-7.
This is by far Greece's worst showing at the Olympic Tournament. With the knockout stages up next, Greece will need to get past this performance and return to victories if they hope to
Medal in Rio.
Their Final placement in group A will depend on today's other group stage matches. Hungry (3rd) will face the hosts Brazil (2nd) whole Serbia will Play Last placed Japan.
