Eleftherios Petrounias has done it, OLYMPIC GOLD! With a score of 16.000 the Greek athlete confirmed that he is the best Rings gymnastic in the world, earning Greece's 3rd medal at the Rio games (2nd gold).
Petrounias was the clear favorite for the gold medal in the Men's Ring event coming into Rio, after winning gold at every major competition the last 2-years. In qualifying, Petrounias finished second with a score of 15.833 behind Hao You from China, who scored 15.900. The current World & back-to-back European Champion performed a near perfect routine in the event's Final Round to achieve a score of 16.000. The score put him in first place with 6 athletes remaining. The last gymnast was the defending Olympic Champion and hometown hero Arthur Zanetti from Brazil. The Brazilian scored a 15.766 (finished 2nd), giving Petrounias the GOLD MEDAL in his first Olympic Games!
It is Greece's 2nd gold medal at the Rio games after Anna Korakaki won gold in the 25 m pistol Shooting event. Dimosthenis Tambakos was the last Greek athlete to win the gold medal in the Men's Rings competition, when Greece hosted the Olympics in 2004.
