- Filippidis Far From His Best -
track & field - men's pole vault (final round)
|Kostas Filippidis||5.50 meters||7th|
The big jump did not come for Kostas Filippidis...The Greek Pole vaulter finished in 7th place in the Final Round of the competition only registering one successful jump at 5.50 meters.
After a good showing in the qualifying round (finished 2nd), Kostas Filippidis was considered a contender for a medal in the Men's Pole Vault competition. Filippidis got off to a great start, clearing his first jump of 5.50 meters on his first attempt. However, three failed attempts at 5.65 meters brought an early exit to Filippidis' run in the Final Round. With his season best at 5.91 meters, he will see the Rio games as a missed opportunity for a better finish. Similar to London 2012, Filippidis claimed 7th place in the competition.
The gold medal went to Tiago Braz da Silva from Brazil with a jump of 6.03 meters while the silver and bronze medals went to Renaud Lavillenie from France (5.98) and Sam Kendricks from the United States (5.85).
