- APOEL Down but Not Out -
UEFA CHAMPIONS LEAGUE - PLAYOFF QUALIFYING ROUND, LEG 1
|Copenhagen||1 - 0||APOEL|
||(1 - 0)
APOEL fell 1-0 in their first leg match of the UEFA Champions League Playoff Qualifying Round in Denmark against Copenhagen. Despite the loss, APOEL will host the Danes in one week with hopes of getting the result that will send them to the Champions League Group Stage.
Like in 2009, when the two teams met in Champions League Qualifying, Copenhagen will take a 1-0 lead to Cyprus going into the second leg. The only goal of the match came in the 43rd minute through Pavlovic, after heavy pressure from the home side in the final 20 minutes of the half. Copenhagen lucky in the opening 11 minutes of the match, when their goalkeeper was not sent off for a handball outside of the penalty box.
In the second half APOEL was extremely fortunate to not give up a second goal. In the 70th minute Verbic's strike was denied by the woodwork and in the 3rd minute of stoppage time, Copenhagen missed a GOLDEN opportunity to double their lead before the final whistle. On the other end, APOEL had good opportunities to level the score with Gianniotas and de Camargo wasting their chances for an equalizer.
APOEL will now look to do what they did in 2009 when they overturned their 1-0 defeat in Copenhagen to qualify for the Champions League Group Stage. Then, they won 3-1 at home. A similar task will be needed in the second leg in Nicosia next Wednesday.
