Greece played to a 9-9 draw against Serbia in the second group match of the Rio 2016 Men's Water Polo Tournament. Although it was a GREAT result against the World Champions, the Greek team will be disappointed after coming very close to a victory. Greece will play their third (of 5) group match on Wednesday as they sit 2nd in in Group A.
Greece got off to a great start taking a 0-2 lead with Fountoulis’ penalty and Pontikeas’ goals. The Galanolefki was led by their defense, shutting out the World Champions in the second period and found themselves ahead 1-4 at halftime.
Greece went ahead by four goals at the beginning of the 3rd period (1-5) before Serbia responded and cut Greece’s lead to one (5-6). A late goal from Vlachopoulos restored Greece’s advantage to two goals (5-7) at the end of the period. After a goal from each team at the start of the final period (6-8), the Serbians went on to tie the match 8-8 and eventually took the the lead 9-8 late in the game. However a goal with 1:47 remaining from Greece’s best player, Fountoulis (scored 4 goals), Greece saved an important point with a 9-9 draw.
After a shaky start against Japan, the Greeks showed in today’s match why they are a heavy favorite to earn an Olympic medal in Rio. The draw drops our National Team to second place of Group A in the Men’s Water Polo Tournament. Their next match will be against another tough opponent, Hungary, on Wednesday August 10th where Greece can "secure" their place in the quarter-finals.
