- Olympiacos Signs Martins, Masuaku Completes Deal to West Ham -
It was a busy day at the office for Olympiacos with the team signing a new player and completing Arthur Masuaku’s deal to West Ham. Olympiacos signed Portuguese midfielder Andre Martins late in the day and he was added to the roster for the upcoming UEFA Europa League matches (the roster deadline was today). Additionally, it seems that the new coach of the Greek Champions will be Portuguese manager Paulo Bento.
Olympiacos is extremely close to finalizing a deal with a new manager, Portuguese coach Paulo Bento, and with that move the Greek Champions have made their first signing for their “new” roster. Andre Martins is a 26-year old Portuguese defensive midfielder who signed as a free-agent after not renewing his contract with Sporting Lisbon. He was with the Portuguese club since 2011 with his best season being in 2013-2014. That year he was a starter for the club where he appeared in 27 matches and scored 3 goals. Last season he was not a first choice player and only made 7 appearances with the first team. He is currently in Rio representing his country at the Olympic Games and has two international caps with Portugal’s first team. His current responsibilities at the Olympics could leave him out of the two crucial matches against Arouca in the Europa League playoffs. Olympiacos was on a time crunch to sign a player before their roster was due to UEFA at the end of the day, but the new Olympiacos player could well miss out on Olympiacos’ upcoming European matches (depending on Portugal's run in the competition). It is speculated that he has signed a 3-year deal with the Greek club.
Olympiacos left-back Arthur Masuaku will continue his career in England with West Ham. The Frenchman was expected to leave earlier in the summer, but Olympiacos’ high asking price halted many deals. In the end, the Erythrolefki will receive over €8 million from West Ham (originally wanted over €13 million), which will help the team financially since being eliminated from the Champions League. Masuaku signed a 4-year deal with the Premier League club and stated “It is an honor for me to be apart of this team and play alongside players like Payet. For me, the Premier League is the best league in Europe and it was a goal of mine to play here. I am here to prove that I can play at such a big club.” Masuaku signed with Olympiacos in 2014 and was one of the team's best players. He had 51 appearances with the club and scored in his Champions League debut against Atletico Madrid to help Olympiacos to a 3-2 victory. The former left back of Olympiacos thanked the club via Twitter for all the success he was apart of during his stay in Greece.
