- Good First Result for PAOK -
UEFA EUROPA LEAGUE - GROUP STAGE (GROUP j)
|PAOK||0 - 0||Fiorentina|
PAOK and Fiorentina played a 0-0 draw in the first match of Group J in the UEFA Europa League. Fiorentina was overall the better side throughout the 90 minutes with PAOK missing two good opportunities in the final 5 minutes to steal all three points.
The opening 25 minutes were played without a good chance for either side. The best opportunity of the half came in the 26th minute for the visitors, when Glykos made a great save to deny Babacar from the top of the penalty area. PAOK had trouble developing anything on the offensive end as Fiorentina continued to look the better side. After a mediocre first half, the teams went into the break goalless.
Fiorentina began the second half on the attack with Glykos denying Babacar once again in the 52nd minute. The half continued with nothing to note until the 85th minute, where PAOK failed to score through their best chance of the match. Rodrigues was sent in on goal, dribbling past by the last defender, but could not beat Tatarusanu. PAOK had one final opportunity for a late winner in the final minute of stoppage time, with Rodrigues charging down the left side and crossing the ball (instead of having an effort on goal) which was blocked by a Fiorentina defender (shouts for a possible handball) and the game ended goalless.
PAOK will take one point against the theoretically “toughest” team in the group and will look for their first victory in the Europa League Group Stage when they travel to Slovan Liberec in two weeks. Fiorentina will host Qarabag in matchday 2.
In the other group match, Slovan Liberec and Qarabag played to a 2-2 draw, a result that favors PAOK.
