Dimosthenis Michalentzakis has won the GOLD medal in the Men’s 100 meter Butterfly S9 Swimming event! The Greek athlete set a new Paralympic record with his time of 59.27 seconds.

Dimosthenis Michalentzakis has given Greece their first medal in swimming at the Rio 2016 Paralympic Games. With a time of 59.27 seconds, he set a new Paralympic Record in the Men’s Butterfly S9 event. The 17-year old athlete finished the first half of the race behind Hungarian swimmer Tamas Sors, but with a late push was able to surpass Sors (59.85 seconds) and the Italian Federico Morlacchi (59.52 seconds, silver) to win gold.

Michalentzakis also swam in the Men’s 50m Freestyle S9 category and 200m Men’s Individual Medley SM9 event, but failed to reach the final in either competition. It is Greece’s 5th gold medal in Rio and 12th overall.
