- No Problem Against the Greek Ajax -
GREEK SUPERLEAGUE - MATCHDAY 4
|Panathinaikos||4 - 0||PAS Giannina|
|Berg 38', 76'
Panathinaikos fell to Ajax midweek in the Europa League, but were able to come away with an easy 4-0 victory over the “Ajax of Epirus”, PAS Giannina. An early sending off for PAS Giannina made their task very difficult as Lod, Leto, and Berg (two goals) scored for Panathinaikos.
Neither team dominated the first twenty minute, however Panathinaikos took advantage of an early mistake by PAS Giannina’s goalkeeper, Paschalakis, who committed a handball outside the box, leading to a straight red from the referee (22nd minute). Stramaccioni subbed off the third stopper Ivanov for Villafanez and the hosts began to press PAS Giannina in their final third. The breakthrough came in the 38th minute, when Coulibaly’s cross was powerfully met by Berg’s header to give Panathinaikos the lead. The post and a defensive clearance off the line denied Berg a second goal and Leto missed two great chances at the end of the half as Panathinaikos took their one goal advantage into the break.
The hosts continued their pressure from the first half and Berg’s pin-point cross found Lod, who doubled Panathinaikos’ lead in the 54th minute. A simple one-two between Berg and Leto, setup Berg for his second goal in the 76th minute and Leto capped off a great night with Panathinaikos’ 4th goal of the game 3 minutes before the end.
It seems that Panathinaikos have surpassed their midweek defeat to Ajax in the Europa League with their emphatic 4-0 victory over PAS Giannina. Next week, the Prasini will travel to Agrinio to play Panetolikos while PAS Giannina will look for all three points away to Kerkyra.
